how does one come to believe in a power greater than themself?

A Power Greater Then Myself. With time you will start to see that there is something greater then yourself working in your life. Weather its an "Energy" type of thing or you belive in "God" or just that SOMETHING is helping you to stay clean in your daily life. By energy I mean that alot of people belive in the "Power of Energy" - Postive things happen to Positive people. You can pray to that power daily - and when you finally accept that "power" for what it is.....something greater then yourself helping you live life on a daily basis CLEAN and helping you do the next right thing - Thats the process this step is talking about - weather or not you LIVE by your higher powers guidance yet is not the point of this step - but if you have over time started to Believe in this power - and notice yourself NOT making the same INSANE choices on a daily basis(Waking up and wanting or GOING to get drugs) thats the step - just BELEIVEING in the power and letting it keep you stay clean - you don't need to get caught up in FAITH until the 3rd step - that step will turn your belief into faith - and once you have the FAITH you need in your higher power....and if your not relgious to that point yet we can call faith TRUST - once you have trust in your higher power after turning your will and life over for a period of time seeing how doing this has increased the quality of living for you - Then you can move on to step 4 Don't get caught up by the word GOD - it can mean whatever you want right now - and be anything you want - and your version of god may change by the next time you go through the steps - and thats fine too - Just try to live life praying to your "higher" power - or GOD - (Good Orderly Direction, Group of Drunks/Druggies) whatever you need to do to get past the word GOD for now - and see how a HIGHER POWER helps you life clean and sober JFT - then you will move further in this step and onto the next! realization happens. for some it is a slap in the face that there is a higher power .... for others such as myself. it was a subtle thing....came with working the program and trying to dump the stinking thinking along with staying sober. doesn't matter how it happens but one day you will realize that there is something there that you can't quite put your finger on but you have a feeling that something is helping you stay clean and sober..whether it be your own ego...or a spiritual, religious, etc. phenomena. that is doing it for you. when we reach this realization the cravings, the needs we used to have, the stinking thinking, and everything else will gradually subside although with some never go away completely. But the realization that your program is getting easier to work finally hits home..keep up the good work, do the steps, fight the urge to use and let life happen. |

In step to, you come to believe in a power greater than yourself, which means you accept that you have no control over your disease, and know that you have to give your problems to a great power, no matter what it is you believe in, whether its God, Buddha, Ala, Jehovah, or the doorknob on your front door. You have to give it up to something greater, you don't have to believe in anything. You just have to accept there is something of a higher power that will take your problems, and help you change them. You have to be willing to give up everything to whatever the power you choose!! If you don't believe in a higher power, then you aren't ready to move on, but you can keep doing the motions and attempting it, and after a while your mind should follow!!! Good luck, and i hope i didn't confuse you!!! Just follow the actions and your mind will follow! The basic concept is knowing that there is a higher power that is greater than you, and you have to give up your problems! GOod Luck! xoxoxo |
