The February 15th “Just for Today” reading begins with a common sentiment among those new to Narcotics Anonymous: the surprise of embarking on a spiritual journey. Initially, many of us arrive at NA meetings with little awareness of the spiritual emptiness we’ve been carrying or the profound awakening that awaits us. This journey from spiritual unconsciousness to awareness is likened to awakening from a deep sleep, a process that unfolds gradually as we engage with the Twelve Steps.
Describing the First Step as an alarm clock that jolts us into semi-consciousness, the meditation captures the initial shock and denial that often accompany the realization of our powerlessness over addiction. This awakening may feel abrupt and uncomfortable, leaving us uncertain about stepping out of our familiar yet painful comfort zone.
As we move to the Second and Third Steps, we begin to feel the gentle guidance of a power greater than ourselves, encouraging us to take action and trust in the recovery process. The metaphor extends through the Fourth and Fifth Steps, where the act of taking a personal inventory and admitting our wrongs to another person helps to clear the fog of denial and self-deception, allowing us to see ourselves and our spirituality more clearly.
By the time we reach the Sixth through the Ninth Steps, we’re fully engaged in the process of change, experiencing a newfound energy and optimism. Our spirits start to sing, symbolizing the joy and lightness that come from making amends, seeking forgiveness, and working on our character defects. This stage of the journey reflects significant spiritual growth and the emergence of a positive outlook on life.
The Twelfth Step is where the metaphor culminates, with us leaving the house in search of others to awaken. This step represents the transition from personal transformation to carrying the message of recovery to those still suffering. It signifies a full spiritual awakening, where the joy and fulfillment found in recovery are shared, further enriching our spiritual journey.
On February 15th, and every day, “Just for Today” invites us to commit to using the Twelve Steps as a means of awakening our spirits. This process of spiritual renewal is not just about overcoming addiction but about discovering a deeper sense of purpose, connection, and joy in life.
Today’s meditation reminds us that spiritual awakening is a continuous journey, one that requires daily commitment, honesty, and openness to change. By embracing the Twelve Steps, we allow ourselves to be transformed, experiencing each day with a renewed spirit and a heart open to the wonders of recovery.
