Just For Today – July 23 – Surrendering Self-Will

“We want and demand that things always go our way. We should know from our past experience that our way of doing things did not work.”
Surrendering self-will is a cornerstone of recovery. Self-will often manifests as a relentless pursuit of control, where we impose our desires on others and expect the world to conform to our plans. While having goals and taking action is vital, recovery teaches us to align our efforts with the will of a Higher Power. In doing so, we find peace, connection, and a path that leads to true fulfillment.

The Pitfalls of Self-Will

Living by self-will is a recipe for frustration and conflict. When we are driven solely by our own desires, we lose sight of the bigger picture. We become self-centered, ignoring the needs of others and the wisdom of a Higher Power.

How Self-Will Harms Us:

  1. Creates isolation: Self-will often alienates us from others, as it prioritizes our needs over theirs.
  2. Breeds frustration: When reality doesn’t match our expectations, we feel angry or defeated.
  3. Limits spiritual growth: Self-will blocks us from surrendering to a Higher Power, cutting us off from true strength and guidance.

In recovery, we learn that relying solely on self-will is not sustainable. It leads us back to the same chaos and dissatisfaction that addiction brought into our lives.

The Freedom of Surrender

Surrendering self-will is not about abandoning responsibility or ambition. It’s about acknowledging that we are part of something greater and aligning our actions with the guidance of a Higher Power. This surrender brings a profound sense of freedom and peace.

Benefits of Surrender:

  • Reduces stress: Letting go of the need to control everything lightens our emotional burden.
  • Builds connection: Surrender opens us to collaboration and understanding with others.
  • Fosters clarity: Trusting in a Higher Power helps us make decisions aligned with our true purpose.

When we surrender self-will, we move from chaos to harmony, discovering a life that flows with greater ease.

Balancing Initiative and Surrender

Recovery doesn’t mean we stop thinking for ourselves or making plans. Instead, it encourages us to act responsibly while seeking alignment with God’s will. This balance allows us to take initiative without falling into the trap of self-centeredness.

Steps to Align Plans with God’s Will:

  1. Pause and reflect: Before taking action, ask whether your plans serve a greater good or just your own desires.
  2. Seek guidance: Prayer and meditation can provide insight and clarity.
  3. Be open to change: Accept that plans may need to adapt as circumstances unfold.
  4. Consider others: Ensure your actions respect and support those around you.

By balancing initiative with surrender, we create a life that is both purposeful and peaceful.

Recognizing Self-Will and Letting Go

There are moments when we realize we are at odds with the world around us, driven by self-will and frustration. In these times, recovery invites us to step back and surrender.

“If I find myself at odds with everything around me, I will surrender self-will.”

Surrendering doesn’t mean giving up; it means letting go of the need to force outcomes. It’s an act of faith that allows us to realign with God’s will and find our way back to serenity.

Living in Harmony with God’s Will

The journey of recovery is about learning to live in harmony with ourselves, others, and our Higher Power. By surrendering self-will and seeking God’s guidance, we free ourselves from the struggle of trying to control everything. In this surrender, we find a life of balance, peace, and purpose.

Just for today: I will plan to do God’s will, not mine. If I find myself at odds with everything around me, I will surrender self-will.
