Just For Today – July 25 – Twelfth Step “Failure”?

“Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”
Carrying the message to other addicts is a cornerstone of recovery, embodying the essence of Step Twelve. However, it’s natural to question the outcome when our efforts don’t appear to succeed. Recovery reminds us that there is no such thing as a “failed” Twelfth Step call. Regardless of the immediate results, our actions have lasting impact—not only for others but for ourselves.

Planting the Seed of Recovery

Every time we share our experience, strength, and hope with another addict, we plant the seed of recovery. The prospect may not immediately embrace the program, but our words and actions can take root over time, becoming a source of hope when they are ready to seek change.

The Value of Planting Seeds:

  1. Sparking hope: Our stories show that recovery is possible, even for those who feel hopeless.
  2. Providing resources: We offer a path and a community to turn to when they are ready.
  3. Building connection: Sharing our journey creates a bridge of understanding and compassion.

The act of carrying the message is meaningful, even if we never witness its full impact.

Gratitude in Action

Participating in a Twelfth Step call benefits both the person receiving the message and the one delivering it. Even if the individual doesn’t respond as we hoped, the act of sharing strengthens our own recovery and deepens our gratitude.

“Rarely does a recovering addict leave a Twelve Step call with anything but a deep dose of gratitude.”

How Twelfth Step Work Benefits Us:

  • Reinforces recovery principles: Sharing our story reminds us of the progress we’ve made.
  • Cultivates humility: We serve without expectations, focusing on giving rather than results.
  • Fosters connection: Engaging with others deepens our ties to the recovery community.

In giving, we receive—whether or not the recipient accepts the message.

Living the Twelfth Step Daily

The Twelfth Step is not limited to formal outreach or calls. Often, we embody its principles simply by living in recovery. Our coworkers, neighbors, and acquaintances may observe our transformation and see the benefits of the program through our actions.

“We are often the best attraction that NA has to offer.”

Ways to Practice the Twelfth Step Daily:

  1. Lead by example: Demonstrate recovery principles in your interactions with others.
  2. Be available: Let others know you are open to sharing your story or helping those in need.
  3. Serve with humility: Focus on being of service without attaching to outcomes.
  4. Share authentically: Be honest about your struggles and successes, showing that recovery is possible.

By living as an example, we carry the message in ways we might not even realize.

The Paradox of Giving

The Twelfth Step reflects a profound truth: in giving, we receive. When we share our journey with others, we deepen our connection to recovery, strengthen our spiritual foundation, and experience the joy of helping another human being.

Whether or not the person we reach out to accepts our help, the act of offering it enriches our lives.

Just for today: I will remember that I am a living example of the Twelfth Step. I cannot “fail” when I try to carry the message to another addict.
