Just for Today: March 7 – Priorities

Remembering What Matters Most

In the ebb and flow of recovery, we often find ourselves basking in the light of positive changes and achievements. While these moments of joy and success are to be celebrated, today’s meditation serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of maintaining our priorities, with sobriety at the forefront.

The Seduction of Success

“The good times can also be a trap; the danger is that we may forget that our first priority is to stay clean.” – Basic Text, p. 42

Success and happiness in recovery can sometimes lead us into a sense of complacency. The achievements we’ve longed for—be it in love, career, or family—can become so engrossing that they inadvertently shift our focus away from the foundational practices that sustain our recovery. The allure of these “good times” poses a subtle risk, tempting us to sideline the very principles that facilitated these achievements.

Maintaining Our Foundation

As we navigate the rewarding aspects of our recovery, it’s crucial to remember that these successes are built upon our commitment to staying clean and engaged with our support network. The joy of newfound relationships, career fulfillment, or family reconciliation should enhance our recovery, not distract from it. Our engagement with meetings, our connection with our sponsor, and our dedication to the steps are integral to sustaining the progress we’ve made.

Integrating Success with Sobriety

Successfully reintegrating into society and achieving personal goals are milestones worth celebrating. However, these should not lead us to forget our vulnerabilities to addiction. The journey of recovery is ongoing, and our achievements outside of recovery are only as strong as our commitment to maintaining our sobriety. Balancing our successes with our recovery work ensures that we can enjoy the fruits of our labor without jeopardizing the foundation of our sobriety.

A Daily Commitment to Our Priorities

Today, let us take a moment to reflect on our priorities, recognizing that the essence of our recovery lies in our unwavering commitment to sobriety. Let our successes be a testament to the strength and resilience we’ve cultivated through our recovery journey, not a distraction from it. By reaffirming our priorities daily, we ensure that our achievements serve to bolster, not undermine, our commitment to a life of sobriety and growth.
