Basic Text, page 102
Recovery meetings are a cornerstone of our journey towards a healthier, addiction-free life. Each night, gathering with other addicts to share experiences, strength, and hope reinforces our commitment to recovery. The lessons learned in these meetings are essential for navigating daily life.
However, the demands of everyday living—work, family, friends, school, sports, entertainment, community activities, civic obligations—can sometimes make us question, “How long do I have to go to these meetings?”
Before joining Narcotics Anonymous (NA), many of us struggled to stay clean on our own. It’s crucial to reflect on those times and recognize that our efforts to manage addiction without support were often unsuccessful. The reality is that addiction is a chronic, progressive illness that requires ongoing treatment and support.
Addiction is characterized by chronic self-centeredness, obsessive thoughts, and compulsive behaviors. These patterns can manifest in various areas of our lives, making it challenging to maintain sobriety without effective treatment. Unlike “ordinary” people who may not face these struggles, we must acknowledge that we have a fatal, progressive illness that demands continuous attention and care.
NA meetings provide the support and direction needed to recover from addiction. They offer a safe space to connect with others who understand our struggles and can offer valuable insights. These meetings help us stay grounded and focused on our recovery, ensuring that we don’t relapse into old habits.
To live and enjoy life fully, it is essential to prioritize recovery. This means consistently attending meetings, engaging with the recovery community, and applying the principles learned in NA to our daily lives. By putting recovery first, we can maintain our sobriety and build a life that is both fulfilling and productive.
Regular attendance at NA meetings provides numerous benefits:
Recovery is an ongoing process that requires dedication and effort. By putting recovery first and consistently attending meetings, we ensure that we stay on the right path. This commitment allows us to live and enjoy life to the fullest, free from the chains of addiction.
Just for today, commit to putting your recovery first. Attend meetings, stay connected, and embrace the support and direction that NA provides. Live a full, productive, and enjoyable life.
