Just for Today: March 17 – True Courage

Discovering Strength Beyond Ourselves

In the realm of recovery, our understanding of courage undergoes a profound transformation. Today, we delve into the essence of true courage — a quality that emerges not from the absence of fear but from facing life on life’s terms, clean and sober.

Redefining Bravery

“Those who make it through these times show a courage not their own.” – Basic Text, p. 82

Before embarking on our journey of recovery, many of us equated bravery with a lack of fear, often masking our vulnerabilities behind a facade of indifference or toughness, reinforced by substance use. This false bravado, however, did little to prepare us for the genuine challenges of life.

Courage in Recovery

True courage in recovery is markedly different from the illusory bravery of our past. It does not stem from the denial of fear or the numbing of our emotions but from the willingness to confront our fears, acknowledge our feelings, and take responsibility for our actions and well-being.

The Source of Our Strength

The courage we find in recovery often feels as though it comes from a source beyond ourselves. It is nurtured by the support of our fellowship, the guidance of our sponsors, and a Higher Power of our understanding. This collective strength empowers us to face the uncertainties of life with resilience and hope.

Living Courageously

Living courageously means embracing the challenges of recovery head-on. It involves making amends for past harms, pursuing personal growth, and committing to a life of honesty and integrity. True courage is found in the daily choices we make to stay clean, support others in their journey, and cultivate a life of meaning and purpose.

Embracing Our Vulnerabilities

Part of true courage is the acceptance of our vulnerabilities. Recognizing our limitations and seeking help when needed is not a sign of weakness but a testament to our strength. It is through this acceptance that we can grow and learn, transforming our vulnerabilities into sources of power.

A Commitment to Courage

Today, let’s commit to embodying true courage in our recovery. Let’s draw on the collective strength of our fellowship, face our fears with honesty, and move forward with the knowledge that we are never alone in our struggles. True courage is the hallmark of our journey — a journey marked by growth, healing, and the unwavering hope for a brighter future.
