Just for Today – October 2 – Keeping Faith

“We grasp the limitless strength provided for us through our daily prayer and surrender as long as we keep faith and renew it.”
Basic Text, page 44

Recovery is a journey that relies on faith. The initial decision to get clean requires faith—faith that a better life is possible, that help is available, and that a Power greater than ourselves can guide us. Staying clean, however, is an ongoing process that demands we renew that faith each day. Through surrender, prayer, and trust in our Higher Power, we find the strength to live a clean and fulfilling life.

Faith in Getting Clean

Getting clean is a monumental first step in recovery, but it’s one we only have to take once. For many of us, the decision to stop using came from a place of desperation. We recognized that our addiction was more powerful than we were and that our attempts to control it had failed. In that moment of surrender, we placed our faith in a Higher Power, trusting it to do for us what we could not do for ourselves.

This act of faith is what made it possible for us to get clean. By admitting our powerlessness and turning our will over to a Power greater than ourselves, we found the strength to let go of our addiction. That initial leap of faith was the foundation upon which our recovery was built.

Faith in Staying Clean

While getting clean is a one-time event, staying clean is an ongoing commitment. Each day in recovery presents new challenges, temptations, and uncertainties. The key to maintaining sobriety lies in renewing our faith daily.

We do this through prayer and surrender. Each morning, we reaffirm our commitment to stay clean, asking our Higher Power for guidance and strength. Throughout the day, we continue to rely on that power, turning to it whenever life feels overwhelming. By keeping our faith alive, we tap into a limitless source of strength and resilience.

The Basic Text reminds us that life is too big for us to handle alone. But we don’t have to. Faith connects us to the resources we need to navigate life’s challenges and live with purpose and peace. When we trust in our Higher Power and take things one day at a time, we discover that we are capable of far more than we ever imagined.

The Daily Practice of Faith

Faith isn’t something we develop once and then forget about—it’s a practice that must be nurtured and renewed every day. Just as we exercise our bodies to stay physically strong, we must exercise our faith to stay spiritually strong.

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools for renewing faith. Through prayer, we communicate with our Higher Power, seeking guidance, expressing gratitude, and surrendering our fears. Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated; it can be as simple as asking for the strength to stay clean or the wisdom to handle a difficult situation. The act of reaching out to our Higher Power reminds us that we are not alone and that help is always available.

Surrender is another essential part of maintaining faith. Each day, we let go of the illusion of control and trust that our Higher Power will lead us in the right direction. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up; it means acknowledging our limitations and relying on a power greater than ourselves to fill the gaps. This daily act of surrender reinforces our faith and keeps us grounded in recovery.

The Strength of Faith

Faith is a powerful resource in recovery. It provides the strength we need to face life’s challenges, the courage to move forward, and the peace to let go of what we cannot control. When we trust in our Higher Power, we gain access to an infinite source of support and guidance.

This strength is always available to us, but we must actively seek it. By keeping faith and renewing it daily, we ensure that we are never without the tools we need to live clean and full lives. Faith is not about having all the answers or being free from doubt; it’s about trusting that we are on the right path and that our Higher Power is with us every step of the way.

Living a Life of Faith

A life of faith is one of hope, resilience, and growth. As we continue to practice faith in our recovery, we find that it extends beyond staying clean. It influences every aspect of our lives, from our relationships to our work to our personal goals. Faith helps us navigate uncertainty, embrace change, and find meaning in our experiences.

By keeping faith, we open ourselves to the limitless possibilities of recovery. We discover that even in the face of challenges, we are supported by a power greater than ourselves. This faith not only keeps us clean but also helps us build a life that is rich, fulfilling, and grounded in purpose.
